My Frame of Mind

My current obsession with frame groupings goes way beyond just empty frames.  I love framed mirrors, framed vintage prints, framed silhouettes, ....you get the idea....I love them all.   

This post however is about the beauty of empty frames and how quickly they can take a boring wall and from drab to fab.   Take for instance these beauties....

There is nothing more simple than taking a few vintage frames and pairing them with vintage mirrors or vintage prints for a beautiful complex effect yet still keeping the look fresh and modern.

To create a slightly more formal yet simple look, try grouping a variety of mix matched frames with different textures, all painted in the same color.  From gold to glossy white, these monochrome beauties are all the rage.

Foyer Fun

I am almost finished with my mini foyer reno.  Remember it initially looked like this.

Stunning right?  Um yeah not so much.  So my first step was to obtain, make or build a bench, chair, ect , or something to sit on when you come in and take off your shoes.  So I hit the GW and found the perfect mini bench, however when I went back it was gone.  I found these instead..

Thought...these could work.
So I put them in the space.  So far so good.

Let me remind you, this space is tiny.  I don't want too much clutter.  I decided I needed a coat rack and began to search online, Ikea, GW, and couldn't find anything that would work size or budget wise.  


 I began searching for inspiration and decided I could make it for much less.  I went to Home Depot and purchased a piece of pine and cut it to my wall's specifications.  


It looked like this...

I wanted an old worn looking piece so I stained it a dark walnut color..

Then painted it a creamy white..

And proceeded to sand it and beat it with a sock filled with nuts and bolts...I couldn't find a chain...lol.

Headed over to Hobby Lobby and found just the right vintage-looking hooks (of course they were half off...I looooove Hobby Lobby:) and had Mr. Rubbish install them..

I then installed it on my little wall....voila!  Instant coat rack for $15 bucks!

Found this little piece the next day and thought it would be perfect to hold our shoes...

Sorry for the blurry pic...but I did what every DIYer would do and painted it the same color as my coat rack.

Welcome!

I still have a couple of other items such as a new rug and I would like to have a subway print over the two white chairs but this will suffice for now.

La La La Lanterns

I have a certain fascination with lanterns.

Not new shiny, pretty lanterns from Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware, but more like old rusty, smelly lanterns that no one else wants.  The crustier the better :). 

 I think lanterns look great inside or out, formal spaces, or casual beachy or cottagy (is this a word?) spaces.  Plus you can get great looking outdoor lanterns at Lowes or Home Depot for a fraction of what you would spend at the designer stores and still get the same look.  Case in point:  Here are two currently for sale at Home Depot and Lowes that would look great in someone's smaller foyer or over a table in your eat in kitchen..

For $59 bucks, you can't beat it. 

Or this one from Lowes   which would be fabulous as a sconce flanking a mirror or your favorite piece of art. 

For me personally, I love the challenge of finding something old that has a story and a past and using it in a different way or giving it a new life.




  I mentioned in a previous post (or did I?) that I found two huge rusty, nautical lanterns a few weeks ago at a Classy Flea.

This is the before

I fell in love immediately.  


First I cleaned them, then turned them upside down and had Mr. Rubbish drill a hole on the top.

I then installed a pendant light kit....

Went to Home Depot and purchased a rope, jute twine and connected them to an old vintage nail.  

And now they are beautiful pendants perfect for a beach house or to add a little industrial flair to your modern country home.
